ADD Treatment
What causes ADD / ADHD?
Currently, the exact causes of ADD are still unclear to experts even though ADD treatment and detection methods have advanced a lot since 1940’s. Still, investigators blame several factors that result to ADHD. A person with ADD often shows symptoms in early childhood, so experts believe that factors that affect brain’s development in the womb may cause ADD.
ADD, or attention deficit disorder, is just the same as ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Those are different terms used to denote the same disorder, although doctors tend to use ADHD since it was more specific.
There are some false misconceptions about the cause of ADHD. Abuse of prescription and illegal drugs (like narcotics, cocaine, amphetamines and marijuana) or intoxicating substances are not true causes of ADHD, though they may cause symptoms (anxiety, hyperactivity, mania) that can be mistaken for the condition.
Exposure to pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, and sulfur compounds, lead and PCB’s cannot cause ADHD to a child or adult, though experts suspect that unborn children exposed to such compounds increase risk of having the condition.
Sugar, honey and artificial sweeteners cannot also induce hyperactivity to children, especially those with ADHD. Such reaction is more due to positive emotions as most children treat confections and sweets as treats.
There are several suspected causes of ADHD. Genetic disorders, neurological disorders and dopamine problems are being studied to cause ADHD.
